Chapter24 vs Medium vs WordPress

I've been asked a number of times how Chapter24 compares with Medium or WordPress in terms of features.

I don't believe this is a valid comparison as all 3 products are conceptually pretty different and have rather different goals. However since I've been asked so often, I'll outline how Chapter24 differs from Medium and WordPress and the problems we're trying to solve.

vs Medium

Medium's primary focus is to help writers earn money by selling subscriptions to readers. Chapter24 is the complete opposite; we charge writers who write as a hobby a subscription fee to manage and host their blogs; that readers can then access for free.

Medium's ease of use has had a huge influence on Chapter24's product philosophy but in terms of goals they're very different products and have different target audiences.

Medium also has a community and discoverability angle. Readers can follow writers and topics and they see a "feed" of posts based on that. Chapter24 blogs act more like independent websites and don't form part of a community as such. On this point, Chapter24 is conceptually closer to WordPress.

vs WordPress

In some ways, Chapter24 is more comparable to WordPress as both platforms enable blogs to act as independent websites without the content aggregation or "news feed" angle.

WordPress is a lot more than just a blogging platform though; it's a massive CMS (Content Management System) that runs about 30% of all websites on the internet.

Due to this, setting up a simple blog with basic features such as email subscription and comments can be quite tedious; and it would result in a massive paradox of choice while selecting themes and plugins.

Chapter24 has a laser focus on simplicity. Out of the box, it gives you a blog with comments and email subscription at a reasonable, fixed monthly price. Using WordPress, not only would you have to spend a lot more time up front on setup, but you'd also likely have to spend more money on plugins or themes to get your blog up and running.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it's not that Chapter24 is better or worse than WordPress or Medium. It's a product with different and very specific goals that would appeal to a certain type of customer.

If that's you, then great. I'd love to have you on board! If not, that's fine too; I hope WordPress or Medium or whatever other platform solves your problem for you :).
